Stud Wall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the other side of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/1650-timber-frame-rot\/\">rotten timber frame<\/a> is the main bedroom.\u00a0\u00a0 It&#8217;s a bit dingy in there as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/crittal-windows\/\">window has been boarded up<\/a> for the last few weeks.<\/p>\n<p>To avoid too much more inconvenience I&#8217;m building new stud walls on the inside before removing the outside wall.\u00a0\u00a0 There will be a 25mm ventilated gap between the stud wall and timber frame on the outside wall which will help keep the timber frame dry.\u00a0 The studwork is 3 by 2 with 75mm Celotex infill.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/stud-wall.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1012\" bedroom were plastered fairly recently, presumably mostly in the 1970s when old looking things weren&#8217;t fashionable.\u00a0 The beam on the outside wall was plastered much earlier in lime, and it was this plaster that was holding the wattle and daub infill in place.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/hole-in-wall.jpg\"><img 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t like plasterboard but it seemed cheap and convenient and would be at the back of the wardrobe so hardly mattered.\u00a0 But It&#8217;s messy to cut, fiddly to match to oddly shaped walls, there is huge wastage, and the filler sinks and needs doing twice.\u00a0\u00a0 Next time I&#8217;m going to splash out on lath and plaster.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/plasterboard.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Installing the stud wall lost 4 to 5 inches of space from the alcoves.\u00a0 The pole supporting the curtain that hides the wardrobe now has an industrial looking extension to bring it forward of the chimney.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/curtain-rail-hanger.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1017\" 3 day job, it&#8217;s all finished.\u00a0\u00a0 The plastic sheet covering the room was very effective at containing the mess.\u00a0 The room will be decorated properly at some point when we get around to decorating, but I need to remember to rebuild the outside half of the wall first.<\/p>\n<p><a
