{"id":1047,"date":"2015-08-01T19:22:05","date_gmt":"2015-08-01T18:22:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1047"},"modified":"2020-04-28T17:55:52","modified_gmt":"2020-04-28T16:55:52","slug":"new-bay-window","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/new-bay-window\/","title":{"rendered":"New Bay Window"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The original upstairs bay window <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/rot-in-the-bay-window\/\">was rotten<\/a> and couldn&#8217;t be saved.\u00a0 (It turns out it is an oriel window as it doesn&#8217;t touch the ground.) \u00a0 The new window frame was made by my cousin John and was installed today.<\/p>\n<p>The profiles were recreated using spindle cutting tools modified to exactly match the original, and further mouldings were guesswork based on old photos of the originals.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/newbay-top-detail.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1048\" src=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/newbay-top-detail-450x338.jpg\" alt=\"new=bay-top-detail\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/newbay-top-detail-450x338.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/newbay-top-detail.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/newbay-top-detail-624x468.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But the frame isn&#8217;t an exact copy of the old one.\u00a0 It looked nice but It would be mad to copy something that only lasted for 100 years.\u00a0 We&#8217;re having another go at it.<\/p>\n<p>The original wood (a slow grown redwood) is resilient and would have been fine but it isn&#8217;t easily available these days so we used Douglas Fir.\u00a0\u00a0 The window will seal only to the inside face of the frame, and if (when) that seal cracks water will be directed into channels and some holes to a ventilated space below the window cill.\u00a0 There are no horizontal surfaces &#8211; everything sheds water, and there are drip features and overhangs all over the place.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/bay-detail.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1051\" src=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/bay-detail-450x338.jpg\" alt=\"bay-detail\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/bay-detail-450x338.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/bay-detail.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/bay-detail-624x468.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I like old stuff and conservation, but mostly that is because I like quality of workmanship and materials.\u00a0 I think this is the best bit of the house.<\/p>\n<p>There is still some work to do.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll need to fit the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/crittall-frame-restoration\/\">crittall openers<\/a> and leaded glass, then fill the remaining bits in lime to keep everything breathable.\u00a0 Then secondary glazing to keep building regs happy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/new-bay.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1049\" src=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/new-bay-450x374.jpg\" alt=\"new-bay\" width=\"450\" height=\"374\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/new-bay-450x374.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/new-bay.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/new-bay-624x518.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While measuring up for infill panels later I found I couldn&#8217;t measure as accurately as the window frame has been made.\u00a0 It must be to 0.1mm tolerance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The original upstairs bay window was rotten and couldn&#8217;t be saved.\u00a0 (It turns out it is an oriel window as it doesn&#8217;t touch the ground.) \u00a0 The new window frame was made by my cousin John and was installed today.
