{"id":1169,"date":"2015-09-23T18:24:14","date_gmt":"2015-09-23T17:24:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1169"},"modified":"2015-10-01T15:51:00","modified_gmt":"2015-10-01T14:51:00","slug":"rotten-timber-in-chimney","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/rotten-timber-in-chimney\/","title":{"rendered":"Rotten Timber in Chimney"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It turns out the new gable timber frame is due to arrive at the start of October (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/1650-timber-frame-rot\/\">the old one was rotten<\/a>) but before the frame arrives there is a lot of work to do.\u00a0\u00a0 There are two beams that pass right through the chimney, but beetle infested wood isn&#8217;t great structurally so needs to go.\u00a0 Some unusual use of acro props with a strongboy at each end (I&#8217;m working higher than the longest acro so can&#8217;t use the ground for support) will hopefully dissuade the chimney from falling over while the beams are cut out.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/acrow.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1185\" src=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/acrow-450x328.jpg\" alt=\"acrow\" width=\"450\" height=\"328\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/acrow-450x328.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/acrow.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/acrow-624x455.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It seems the timber frame is earlier than the chimney, and was much modified when the chimney was added.\u00a0 The brick size and English bond pattern used in the chimney are characteristic of the 17th century.\u00a0 The first records of a pub on the site are from 1646, but I don&#8217;t know whether the building had a previous use, or whether they decided shortly after building it that a brick chimney might be nice.\u00a0 If I can find any wood that has survived the beetles I&#8217;ll hang on to it so I can have it dated at some stage.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/beam-through-chimney.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1182\" src=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/beam-through-chimney-450x325.jpg\" alt=\"beam-through-chimney\" width=\"450\" height=\"325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/beam-through-chimney-450x325.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/beam-through-chimney.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/beam-through-chimney-624x451.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When the chimney was built 2 inch thick brick tiles were added to either side of the timber beam in order to support the chimney brickwork.\u00a0 The tiles on the inside were still supporting the chimney so I left them in place and replaced the timber with bricks before putting the external tiles back in place.
