{"id":1351,"date":"2015-11-30T15:53:53","date_gmt":"2015-11-30T15:53:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1351"},"modified":"2016-01-02T15:31:12","modified_gmt":"2016-01-02T15:31:12","slug":"passivpub","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/passivpub\/","title":{"rendered":"PassivPub"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s taken a week to insulate the attic and the main loft space (and sort out water tank mountings).\u00a0 I&#8217;ve used 300mm Earthwool which almost meets the 0.1 U-value required for a passive house.\u00a0\u00a0 There should be a good payback time insulating to that standard in the loft, and the insulation is unlikely to cause condensation problems as the loft is ventilated.<\/p>\n<p>The first layer was laid at 100mm thickness between the joists and the second 200mm above the joists.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/loft-roll.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1352\" src=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/loft-roll-450x338.jpg\" alt=\"loft-roll\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/loft-roll-450x338.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/loft-roll.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/loft-roll-624x468.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The walls of the attic are only 100mm so not quite to passive house standard.\u00a0 The crawl space above the attic was horrible to insulate.\u00a0\u00a0 Insulation is horrible generally, and even with a good dust mask a lot of it must get into your lungs.\u00a0\u00a0 If I had the money I would have used sheeps wool (which is 4 times the price).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/attic-wall.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1353\" src=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/attic-wall-450x338.jpg\" alt=\"attic-wall\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/attic-wall-450x338.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/attic-wall.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/attic-wall-624x468.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The ceiling beside the loft hatch was built by Georgians from quartered bits of small tree and is not very strong.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve added a new independent structure above the loft hatch and added a section of loft flooring to make it safe to climb into the loft.\u00a0 The loft hatch only has 100mm of insulation but that makes it heavy enough.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/loft-hatch.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1354\" src=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/loft-hatch-450x338.jpg\" alt=\"loft-hatch\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/loft-hatch-450x338.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/loft-hatch.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/loft-hatch-624x468.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is plenty more insulation to do around the house, but just a last section of eaves and the final attic wall remain in the roof space.<\/p>\n<p>A proper passive house should have a heating energy usage of under 15kwh\/m2 per year (measured).
