{"id":1436,"date":"2016-02-24T15:48:38","date_gmt":"2016-02-24T15:48:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1436"},"modified":"2018-06-24T15:47:22","modified_gmt":"2018-06-24T14:47:22","slug":"drainage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/drainage\/","title":{"rendered":"Drainage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Drains have been a problem since we moved in but I need to fix the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/stripping-the-kitchen\/\">damp wall in the kitchen<\/a> before I go much further with that.\u00a0 The drains tended to become blocked in much the same place in the yard, but much less often since the willow was trimmed.<\/p>\n<p>It turns out the kitchen drain had a botched concrete joint and no rodding access.\u00a0 Later on a land drain was installed by knocking through the pipe and concreting in the new connection. Tree roots had found their way under the concrete and filled the drains with roots.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/concrete-drain-connection.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1437\" src=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/concrete-drain-connection-450x320.jpg\" alt=\"concrete-drain-connection\" width=\"450\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/concrete-drain-connection-450x320.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/concrete-drain-connection.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/concrete-drain-connection-624x443.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Replacing the defective joints with an inspection chamber was fairly straightforward, but lowering the hopper is taking a lot more thought.\u00a0 Ideally it would be at the bottom of the trench as that would hide the pipes and keep the kitchen wall dry, but I don&#8217;t want any overflow to end up in the trench.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/inspection-chamber.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1439\" src=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/inspection-chamber-450x340.jpg\" alt=\"inspection-chamber\" width=\"450\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/inspection-chamber-450x340.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/inspection-chamber.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/inspection-chamber-624x471.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I ended up building a retaining wall with a 2 inch gap to the kitchen wall with the side open to the trench that runs around the house.
