{"id":1647,"date":"2018-06-13T16:25:46","date_gmt":"2018-06-13T15:25:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1647"},"modified":"2023-09-22T15:51:39","modified_gmt":"2023-09-22T14:51:39","slug":"snug-fireplace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/snug-fireplace\/","title":{"rendered":"Snug Fireplace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The bedroom is finished apart from paint and I&#8217;ve started on the snug.&nbsp;&nbsp; I&#8217;m planning to fit a wood burner and have removed the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/dry-rot-in-the-snug\/\">late 20th century fireplace<\/a> to get back to the builders opening.<\/p>\n<p>The brickwork is not presentable and will need to be plastered.&nbsp; My idea is to leave a brick arch exposed to add some interest.&nbsp;&nbsp; In the photo the arch former is in position for a trial fit of the arch.&nbsp; The OSB board above the baby acros is there to provide a surface to line up the face of the arch which will be 10mm proud of the brickwork.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1648\" src=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/arch-template-450x361.jpg\" alt=\"arch-template\" width=\"450\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/arch-template-450x361.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/arch-template-768x616.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/arch-template.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/arch-template-624x500.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The arch uses the same bricks as in the main room.&nbsp; The colour differences between the bricks should be reduced when they are sealed. Failing that I will have a multi-coloured arch.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a bit mean to future historians to build the arch in 100 year old bricks so I&#8217;ve made good use of red bricks left over from the new build next door to fill gaps where fireplace mounting wood was removed, and also a couple of loose bricks above the arch that I have saved to match replacement bricks for the exterior wall.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1659\" src=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/arch-complete-450x338.jpg\" alt=\"arch-complete\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/arch-complete-450x338.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/arch-complete-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/arch-complete.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/arch-complete-624x468.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I think the sides of the fireplace opening will need to be plastered as the corners of the bricks have been knocked off.&nbsp; Possibly I will be able to only plaster the corners and make a nice curve. &nbsp; I&#8217;ll likely leave the back of the opening in sooty brick.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The bedroom is finished apart from paint and I&#8217;ve started on the snug.&nbsp;&nbsp; I&#8217;m planning to fit a wood burner and have removed the late 20th century fireplace to get back to the builders opening.
