{"id":2760,"date":"2020-11-22T14:58:30","date_gmt":"2020-11-22T14:58:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/?p=2760"},"modified":"2020-12-03T15:51:30","modified_gmt":"2020-12-03T15:51:30","slug":"plaster-repairs-in-the-ballroom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/plaster-repairs-in-the-ballroom\/","title":{"rendered":"Plaster repairs in the ballroom ceiling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The were a lot of holes in the ballroom ceiling and they are slowly being filled with plaster.\u00a0\u00a0 The walls have been damaged quite extensively and will probably need a skim, but most of the brown coloured ceiling above is in good condition apart from a few holes.\u00a0\u00a0 The ceiling wasn&#8217;t brown originally &#8211; the colour is from a century of tobacco smoke.<\/p>\n<p>Once the plaster on the ceiling is finished I&#8217;m planning the first coat of ceiling paint to brighten up the ballroom.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll do the second coat when I start decorating.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2761\" src=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/plastering-progress-450x338.jpg\" alt=\"plastering-progress\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/plastering-progress-450x338.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/plastering-progress-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/plastering-progress.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/plastering-progress-624x468.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The walls below can&#8217;t be completely finished until the electrician has been, but I can save time later on by making them straight and getting some plaster on them.<\/p>\n<p>For base coat directly on bricks I&#8217;m using a lime render similar to the one I used outside.\u00a0 It goes on much more thickly and smoothly than the white lime repair plaster which is more of a skimming plaster.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I realised while applying this bit that small bit of (modern) plaster above doesn&#8217;t line up with the door jam.\u00a0 Oops &#8211; will knock that off and extend the new plaster to the original a little higher.up.<\/p>\n<p>I found some rotten parquet at the bottom of this bit of this wall.\u00a0\u00a0 I&#8217;m hoping the rest of the concrete floor in the ballroom wasn&#8217;t laid over parquet because that would be really annoying.\u00a0 But it is good to find out the main room was once finished in parquet like the snug.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2765\" src=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/base-coat-393x450.jpg\" alt=\"base-coat\" width=\"393\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/base-coat-393x450.jpg 393w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/base-coat-624x715.jpg 624w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/base-coat.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 393px) 100vw, 393px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For the lath I&#8217;m using St Astier R50 Ultrafine lime plaster because I panic bought a few bags before lockdown.\u00a0\u00a0 It&#8217;s a skimming plaster intended to go over plaster or paint or whatever is there.\u00a0\u00a0 It is strong, sticky, and has a chemical set so it doesn&#8217;t crack.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not exactly the right stuff for base coats as it can&#8217;t be applied thickly with any neatness.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the repair plaster repair is now close to the surface and just needs finishing.\u00a0\u00a0 This one was a fiddle as the picture rail had been cut away.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I spliced in a a bit of picture rail recovered from the chimney and the join isn&#8217;t noticeable from the ground.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2788\" src=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/base-plaster-450x338.jpg\" alt=\"base-plaster\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/base-plaster-450x338.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/base-plaster-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/base-plaster.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/base-plaster-624x468.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve decided to clean the ceiling using sugar soap before the final coat of plaster on the repairs.\u00a0\u00a0 I had thought the paint was gloss, but it seems the gloss was just the muck on top.<\/p>\n<p>Applying the soap with a sponge on the ceiling overhead and scrubbing was physically exhausting and the next day was a recovery day.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been adjusting the process\u00a0 &#8211;
