{"id":525,"date":"2014-08-12T17:23:27","date_gmt":"2014-08-12T16:23:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/?p=525"},"modified":"2014-08-12T19:58:30","modified_gmt":"2014-08-12T18:58:30","slug":"barn-roof","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/barn-roof\/","title":{"rendered":"Barn Roof"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Oh dear,\u00a0 the barn roof turns out to be a bit iffy.<\/p>\n<p>The roof has some nice oak beams but they turn out to be mostly decorative.\u00a0\u00a0 Normally pretty oak beams would form part of a roof truss, but the principal rafters you might expect to see in a roof truss are missing here.\u00a0\u00a0 There are a couple of purlins which are supported by posts back to the middle of the the tie beams which have become bendy as a result.<\/p>\n<p>The roof spread (leaning walls) looks like it may have been caused by a lack of attachment between the tie beams and the wall plate (bit of wood on top of the walls).\u00a0 Some attachments were added in 1983 (I found a newspaper stuffed in) but they aren&#8217;t perfect and the movement is still ongoing at around 1mm\/year.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve stripped the plasterboard from the inside of the roof to see what the structure is.\u00a0\u00a0 Fixing it will take some thought.\u00a0\u00a0 Probably putting back the structure you would expect to see and adding a bit of steel to join the crusty bits together.\u00a0\u00a0 It&#8217;s all very annoying.\u00a0 Putting a kitchen in would have been enough hassle.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/barn-roof.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-526\" alt=\"barn-roof\" src=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/barn-roof-450x337.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/barn-roof-450x337.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/barn-roof-624x468.jpg 624w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/barn-roof.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Oh dear,\u00a0 the barn roof turns out to be a bit iffy.
