{"id":974,"date":"2015-06-30T18:31:20","date_gmt":"2015-06-30T17:31:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/?p=974"},"modified":"2020-05-11T18:04:50","modified_gmt":"2020-05-11T17:04:50","slug":"crittall-frame-restoration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/crittall-frame-restoration\/","title":{"rendered":"Crittall Frame Restoration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following on from the last <a title=\"Crittall Windows\" href=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/crittal-windows\/\">bay window post<\/a>.\u00a0 It seems a bit mad to be restoring Crittal windows in a building that isn&#8217;t listed and I don&#8217;t have to.\u00a0\u00a0 The reason is I like the faceted effect of the leaded glass and don&#8217;t want to replace it with double glazing.\u00a0\u00a0 I am under building regs instruction to improve thermal performance so will have to fit secondary glazing however I mount the leaded glass.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve had the Crittall frames sandblasted. \u00a0 BBS of Bedford did a super job.\u00a0 Anyone planning to do this should first remove the handle first as it turns out to have brass fittings under the caked on paint.\u00a0 The hinges are also brass.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/shotblasted.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-979\" src=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/shotblasted-450x309.jpg\" alt=\"shotblasted\" width=\"450\" height=\"309\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/shotblasted-450x309.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/shotblasted-624x429.jpg 624w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/shotblasted.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The windows have a fascinating construction.\u00a0 The frames themselves are brazed together, then the brass hinges are screwed on, then the bars to the right of the photo which create a flat external mounting face screwed from the inside of the frame.<\/p>\n<p>The frames weren&#8217;t that bad &#8211; only the bottom rails were starting to get a bit thin in places.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/rust.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-978\" src=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/rust-450x337.jpg\" alt=\"rust\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/rust-450x337.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/rust-624x468.jpg 624w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/rust.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The frames from 1910 are mild steel so can be welded.\u00a0 I built up the edges with MIG then ground down to create the original profile. I think the edges need to be welded as they will be sensitive to knocks, but everything else can be done in car bodyfiller.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m using Bilt Hamber Electrox primer which is 90% zinc by weight.\u00a0 I keep nearly dropping the pot as it is unreasonably heavy.\u00a0 It offers some cold galvanising protection which I have found to be very effective on previous car projects, but it does need the shot blasted surface to stick well.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/welded.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-977\" src=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/welded-450x353.jpg\" alt=\"welded\" width=\"450\" height=\"353\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/welded-450x353.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/welded-624x490.jpg 624w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/welded.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The screws holding the windows together are 1\/4 inch Whitworth.I bought some old stock screws from eBay still sealed in 1945 packaging.\u00a0\u00a0 Some had become a little rusty but there were enough good ones for what I needed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/screws.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-976\" src=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/screws-450x325.jpg\" alt=\"screws\" width=\"450\" height=\"325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/screws-450x325.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/screws-624x451.jpg 624w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/screws.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The leaded glass was rebuilt by Fraser of <a href=\"http:\/\/tempsfordstainedglass.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tempsford Stained Glass<\/a> who did a fantastic job.\u00a0 Most of the edging needed to be replaced, a couple of glass panes were changed, and he soldered in some new wire ties to attach to the glazing bars.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/glass.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-975\" src=\"http:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/glass-450x333.jpg\" alt=\"glass\" width=\"450\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/glass-450x333.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/glass-624x462.jpg 624w, https:\/\/www.the-salutation.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/glass.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The frames and glass are going up to Sheffield and a replica wooden frame and bay window timbers will be built around them. (Because I liked the original frame profile too.)<\/p>\n<p>The handles and catches are nice too, but I was missing one of each.\u00a0 Rather than do any lime on the hottest July day on record I&#8217;ve started to make up some new ones.
